Can You Get an ACA Plan Right Now? (2026)

Outside open enrollment, you can only get a Marketplace plan with a qualifying life event. Here's how to tell whether you can enroll today.

The short answer

There are two ways to get an ACA Marketplace plan: during the annual open enrollment period (when anyone can enroll), or through a special enrollment period triggered by a qualifying life event. So whether you can get coverage right now depends on the calendar and your circumstances — if it's not open enrollment, you generally need a qualifying event.

The good news is that many common life changes qualify, so people are often eligible without realizing it.

Qualifying life events

Events that open a special enrollment period include losing other coverage (like a job-based plan), moving to a new area, getting married, having a baby, and certain income or household changes. Losing coverage is the most common — and it must generally be involuntary (not, for example, canceling because you didn't pay). Our guide to ACA special enrollment life events lists the qualifying events and their windows.

If one of these applies to you, you likely have a limited window (often 60 days) to enroll.

How to check

The quickest way to know is to answer a few questions about your situation: has your coverage changed, have you moved, or has your household changed? If yes, you may qualify now. If not, you'll generally wait for open enrollment. A licensed agent can quickly tell you whether you're eligible today. Our ACA overview explains the enrollment windows.

So the answer to whether you can enroll now is often yes — if you have a qualifying event.
