Does Medicare Cover Urgent Care? Copays Explained (2026)

Medicare covers urgent care and retail clinics — but what you pay depends on whether you have Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan. Here's how the costs work.

The short answer

Yes — Medicare covers urgent care visits and retail clinics for the kinds of problems you'd go there for: a bad cold, a minor injury, a urinary tract infection. Under Original Medicare, an urgent care visit is a Part B service, so after your deductible you generally owe 20% coinsurance. Under a Medicare Advantage plan, you usually pay a set copay instead.

The care is covered either way. The difference is just how the cost is structured, and that difference is worth knowing before you need care so there's no surprise.

Original Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage costs

With Original Medicare, urgent care falls under Part B like a regular doctor visit — 20% coinsurance after the deductible, with no fixed copay. A Medicare Supplement plan can cover that coinsurance so you pay little or nothing at the point of care.

With a Medicare Advantage plan, you typically pay a flat urgent care copay, and you'll want to use an in-network urgent care center to get the lower cost. Emergency care is treated differently and is covered even out of network. Our Medicare Advantage overview explains how copays and networks work.

Urgent care vs. the ER

It's worth knowing the cost difference between urgent care and the emergency room, because the ER usually carries a much higher copay or coinsurance. For genuine emergencies, go to the ER without hesitation — but for minor issues, urgent care or a retail clinic is typically both faster and cheaper.

Knowing your plan's copays for each in advance helps you make that call calmly rather than worrying about the bill. Our Medicare basics overview covers how the parts and costs fit together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Medicare cover urgent care visits?

Yes. Medicare covers urgent care and retail clinic visits. Under Original Medicare it's a Part B service with 20% coinsurance after the deductible; under Medicare Advantage you typically pay a flat copay.

How much is an urgent care copay on Medicare Advantage?

It's a set copay that varies by plan. Using an in-network urgent care center gets you the lower cost. Check your specific plan's copay for urgent care.

Is urgent care cheaper than the ER on Medicare?

Usually, yes. Emergency room visits carry higher copays or coinsurance than urgent care. For minor issues, urgent care is typically faster and less expensive; for true emergencies, go to the ER.
