Medigap Plan N Copays & Excess Charges (2026)

Plan N has a lower premium than Plan G, but small copays and Part B excess charges are the tradeoff. Here's what Plan N really costs at the point of care.

The short answer

Medigap Plan N is a popular lower-premium alternative to Plan G. It covers most of the same gaps, but with a few differences that lower its premium: small copays for some office visits and emergency room visits, and it does not cover Part B excess charges. For many people those are minor, which is why Plan N appeals to value-focused buyers.

The question is whether those small out-of-pocket costs are worth the premium savings for your situation. Often they are, but not always.

The copays and excess charges

Plan N charges a small copay (up to a set amount) for some doctor office visits and for emergency room visits that don't lead to admission. It also leaves you responsible for Part B excess charges — extra amounts some providers can bill when they don't accept Medicare's approved amount as full payment. Whether excess charges affect you depends on your providers and your state.

Everything else looks much like Plan G. Our comparison of Plan G versus Plan N lays the two side by side so you can weigh the premium savings against the small copays.

Who Plan N fits

Plan N tends to fit people who don't mind small, predictable copays and whose doctors accept Medicare assignment (so excess charges don't apply). For them, the lower premium is a genuine saving. People who want zero surprises at the point of care, or who see providers that bill excess charges, may prefer Plan G.

Our guide to Part B excess charges context aside, the key is knowing your providers' billing habits before choosing. Both plans are solid; it comes down to your preferences.
