Two Paths, Two Very Different Suitcases
Plenty of Wyoming retirees winter in Arizona or St. George, and plenty of Utah retirees split time with grandkids out of state. How well your Medicare travels depends entirely on which path you chose at enrollment.
Original Medicare with a Medigap supplement travels perfectly: any doctor or hospital in any state that accepts Medicare, no networks, no referrals, no service areas. Medicare Advantage works differently — plans are licensed to a service area and built on local networks, and that structure follows you out the door.
How Advantage Plans Handle Travel
Every Medicare Advantage plan covers emergency and urgent care anywhere in the U.S. — that part is guaranteed. Routine care is the issue: a PPO may cover out-of-network care at higher cost, while an HMO typically covers little outside its area beyond emergencies. Seeing a doctor for ongoing conditions from your winter address can range from 'fine, with paperwork' to 'not covered.'
Two details matter for long-stayers. Some plans offer visitor or traveler programs extending coverage in specific states for several months. And nearly all plans have a residency rule: stay outside the service area too long — commonly beyond six months — and the plan can disenroll you back to Original Medicare.
The Prescription Question
Drug coverage travels better than medical coverage — if you set it up. Most Part D plans use national pharmacy networks, so the practical moves are simple: confirm your plan has network pharmacies near your winter home, prefer chains that operate in both states, or shift maintenance medications to mail order before you leave.
A Checklist Before You Head South
A half-hour review in the fall prevents most winter coverage surprises:
- Know your plan type: Medigap travels free; PPO travels with costs; HMO mostly doesn't
- Ask about a visitor/traveler program if you're on Advantage
- Watch the six-month residency clock on Advantage plans
- Line up in-network (or mail-order) pharmacies at your winter address
- Emergencies are covered everywhere — routine care is what needs planning
- Foreign travel: some Medigap plans add limited emergency coverage abroad; Original Medicare alone covers almost nothing outside the U.S.
Match the Plan to the Lifestyle
If you're already splitting the year between states, your travel pattern is a plan-selection criterion — arguably the deciding one. During Annual Enrollment each fall, that's exactly the review we run for part-year residents: does your current plan actually fit the way you live? For a lot of snowbirds, that one question settles the Advantage-versus-Medigap debate all by itself.
