Medigap Plan Comparison Guide (Plans A Through N)

Medicare Supplement plans are standardized by letter — this guide explains what each lettered plan covers so you can compare apples to apples.

8 min readReviewed for the 2026 plan year

Why Medigap Plans Are Standardized

Unlike Medicare Advantage, every Medigap Plan G sold by any carrier covers the exact same benefits — the only differences are price, customer service, and underwriting.

Most Popular Plans Today

  • Plan G: Covers everything except the Part B deductible. The most comprehensive plan available to most new enrollees.
  • Plan N: Lower premium than Plan G, but you pay small copays for office and ER visits and may owe Part B excess charges.
  • Plan F: No longer available to people newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020, but existing enrollees can keep it.

How to Compare Across Carriers

Since benefits are identical within a plan letter, focus your comparison on monthly premium, rate increase history, and the carrier's financial strength rating.

Key Takeaways

  • Medigap plan benefits are standardized by letter — only price and carrier differ.
  • Plan G is currently the most comprehensive option for new enrollees.
  • Compare carriers on premium and rate-increase history, not benefits.

Medigap availability and pricing vary by state and carrier. Underwriting may apply outside your Medigap Open Enrollment window.
