RMU Students
Health Insurance Options for RMU Health Professions Students
Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions trains graduate clinicians in Provo — PT, OT, PA, nursing, and more. Most RMU students are past 26, many have families, and almost none of the standard 'college student' insurance advice applies to them.
The RMU Situation
Your realistic options as an RMU graduate student
Graduate health-professions students sit in an insurance blind spot: too old for a parent's plan, not yet employed by the health systems they train inside, and often supporting a family on a resident-tight budget. Confirm any school-arranged coverage options with RMU directly — offerings change year to year.
The workable answers usually come from this list — and for married students and parents, they can be mixed and matched by family member:
A spouse's employer plan
The most common anchor for married RMU students. If your spouse's job offers family coverage, compare its total cost against a subsidized Marketplace plan for you — sometimes splitting coverage saves real money.
A subsidized Marketplace plan
Grad-school income is usually low, and student loans don't count as income for subsidy purposes — so healthcare.gov premium tax credits are often substantial during your program years.
Utah Medicaid & CHIP for the kids
Utah expanded Medicaid, and children's eligibility (Medicaid/CHIP) reaches higher up the income scale than adults'. Many RMU families qualify for kids' coverage even when the parents don't.
A parent's plan (if you're still under 26)
Younger direct-entry students can stay on a parent's plan through age 25 — worth keeping if the network covers Utah County and your rotation sites.
Provo Specifics
What matters locally
Families budget by the semester — subsidies help
Marketplace credits are based on your annual income estimate. For a household living on loans and one part-time income, the subsidized premium is often a fraction of the sticker price — run the numbers before assuming you can't afford coverage.
Clinical rotations travel — your network should too
RMU rotations can place you in facilities around Utah County and beyond, including Utah Valley Hospital in Provo. Check that care near home and near your placements is in-network before enrolling.
Graduation and boards: the handoff window
Your first clinician job will carry benefits — after a start date and possibly a waiting period. Plan your coverage to that date, and use the new-coverage enrollment window to switch cleanly.
