USU Eastern Students
Health Insurance Options for USU Eastern Students
USU Eastern in Price (the former College of Eastern Utah) is a small campus in a working county — and Carbon County's coverage math has more to do with jobs, rural networks, and family budgets than any brochure admits.
The USU Eastern Situation
Your realistic options as a USU Eastern student
USU Eastern joined the Utah State system in 2010, and campus student services handle everyday needs — but a full student insurance plan isn't something to assume; confirm current offerings with the school directly.
For most Eagles, the realistic comparison is the four sources below. In a county where many students also work, the job question comes first more often than at other campuses:
A parent's plan (until 26)
Often the simplest answer in Carbon County, where many students are local and their parents' plans already cover area providers. Students from farther away should confirm the network reaches Price.
Coverage through a job
If you're working real hours alongside classes, check whether your employer offers coverage and what it costs — it usually determines whether Marketplace subsidies are available to you.
A subsidized Marketplace plan
Independent tax filers are measured on their own income on healthcare.gov — and typical student earnings in Price qualify for meaningful premium tax credits.
Utah Medicaid
Utah expanded Medicaid: independent students under roughly 138% of the federal poverty level often qualify — a threshold that covers a lot of part-time income in Carbon County.
Price & Carbon County Specifics
What matters locally
Rural networks need verifying
Local care runs through Castleview Hospital and a limited set of Price-area clinics. Confirm any plan you're considering covers them in-network — plans anchored to Wasatch Front networks sometimes don't.
Student athletes and activity coverage
School activity or athletic coverage, where it exists, is usually secondary and limited — it doesn't replace health insurance. Make sure the underlying plan is solid before assuming you're covered.
Transferring to Logan later?
Many Eagles finish at USU's main campus. A move to Cache Valley changes your local network — and a permanent move can open a 60-day Special Enrollment Period to switch plans if you had coverage before.
