Annual Enrollment Review Checklist
Before AEP starts (September)
- Watch the mail for your plan's Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) — it lists exactly what changes January 1
- Read the ANOC's premium, deductible, and copay changes — don't just file it away
- Write down every doctor and specialist you saw this year
- List every prescription: name, dosage, and your current monthly cost
- Note your preferred pharmacy — plans price the same drug differently by pharmacy
Review your current plan (October 15 – December 7)
- Check that every doctor on your list is still in-network for next year
- Check every drug against next year's formulary — tiers and coverage change each year
- Compare next year's premium, deductible, and out-of-pocket maximum against this year's
- Review extra benefits you actually use: dental, vision, hearing, gym, OTC allowance
- Even if you feel healthy and happy with your plan, compare 2–3 alternatives — loyalty has no discount
Make your decision
- Switching: enroll in the new plan by December 7 — it starts January 1, and the new enrollment cancels the old plan automatically
- Staying: no action needed, your plan auto-renews at the new rates
- Write down every confirmation number and keep enrollment paperwork in one folder
- If you use a Medigap plan, remember AEP doesn't apply to it — Medigap can be changed any time, but may require health questions
Free help if you want it
- A licensed independent advisor can run this whole comparison for you at no cost
- Your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) offers free unbiased counseling
- 1-800-MEDICARE and Medicare.gov's Plan Finder show every plan in your ZIP code
This checklist is general education, not personalized advice. Missed the December 7 deadline? The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31) allows one more change for MA enrollees.
