Key Dates to Know
Open Enrollment for 2026 Marketplace coverage opens November 1, 2025 and closes January 15, 2026. Coverage effective dates depend on when you enroll: plans selected by December 15 begin January 1; plans selected between December 16 and January 15 begin February 1.
If you have a qualifying life event — losing employer coverage, getting married, having a child — you may be able to enroll during a Special Enrollment Period outside these dates. But outside of those exceptions, missing the January 15 deadline means waiting until the following November to enroll.
What to Review Before Re-Enrolling
Auto-renewing into your current plan is the path of least resistance — but it's rarely the path of maximum value. Plans change every year. Your premium may increase, your deductible may rise, or your doctors and medications may fall off the formulary. Competing plans may have improved.
Before the deadline, review: your plan's Annual Notice of Change (mailed in September), your current doctor and hospital network status, your prescription drug formulary and tier placement, and your premium tax credit estimate for the coming year. All four factors can shift meaningfully from year to year.
In Wyoming, where plan options are more limited than in most states, the choices between available carriers deserve careful comparison. In urban Utah, increased competition means an annual review sometimes surfaces meaningful savings without giving up coverage quality. Actual savings depend entirely on your specific plans, medications, and providers — the only way to know is to compare your real options side by side.
Documents to Have Ready
To complete enrollment efficiently, gather these documents in advance: Social Security numbers for everyone in your household applying for coverage, estimated 2026 income (wages, self-employment income, Social Security, investment income), current health insurance policy information if you're switching plans, and employer coverage information if anyone in your household has access to job-based insurance.
Income estimation is the most consequential step. Your premium tax credit is calculated from your projected income — if you estimate too low and earn more, you'll repay excess credits when you file taxes. Estimate too high and you'll receive less assistance than you're entitled to throughout the year.
