Why a Move Changes More Than Your Address
Original Medicare itself travels with you — Parts A and B work identically in all 50 states, and any doctor who accepts Medicare can see you. Everything built on top of it is local. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are licensed county by county: the plan you loved in Denver may simply not exist in Laramie County, and even moving from Salt Lake County to Washington County puts you in a different plan lineup. Medigap policies stay in force when you move, but your premium can change with your new ZIP code, and the plans competitively priced in your old state may not be the sharp deals here.
Federal rules handle this with a moving Special Enrollment Period: when you relocate outside your plan's service area (or into an area with new options), you get a window — starting the month before your move and running two full months after — to pick a new Advantage or Part D plan from your new county's menu.
The Checklist, In Order
The sequence matters more than people expect — notify, then compare, then switch:
- Update your address with Social Security (SSA.gov or 1-800-772-1213) — this updates Medicare too
- Tell your current plan you're moving; this timestamps your SEP
- Get your new county's plan lineup — Advantage, Part D, and Medigap pricing all reset with the address
- Rebuild your care team on paper: which local doctors and hospitals take which plans
- Check your prescriptions against new plans' formularies and your new local pharmacy
- If you're on Medigap: keep the policy, but re-shop it — same coverage may cost less from another carrier at your new address
- Transfer medical records and set up a new primary care visit before you need one
What's Different About Our Two States
Wyoming and Utah are different Medicare worlds, and newcomers from metro areas notice. Rural Wyoming counties run thin plan menus where the Advantage-vs-Medigap question tilts differently than it does in a city — networks are small, distances are long, and Medigap's any-provider flexibility earns serious consideration. Utah's Wasatch Front is the opposite: one of the more competitive Advantage markets in the Mountain West, with multiple hospital systems and genuinely distinct networks — where picking by which system your doctors are in is the whole game.
We've written county-level guides across both states — from Utah County to Fremont County, Wyoming — and the full list lives on our locations page.
The Sixty-Second Version
Update Social Security, notify your plan, and get a local comparison before your two-month window closes — that's the whole skeleton. The flesh is local knowledge: which carriers actually contract with the hospital nearest your new home, which pharmacies are preferred, and whether your Medigap premium deserves a re-shop.
That's a conversation we have with new arrivals weekly, at no cost — licensed in both states, with the county-by-county detail already done. Welcome to the Mountain West; bring your drug list.
