Westminster Students

Health Insurance Options for Westminster University Students

Westminster (formerly Westminster College) is a small private university in Salt Lake City's Sugar House neighborhood — and its mix of out-of-state students, graduate students, and working adults means no single coverage answer fits everyone.

The Westminster Situation

Your realistic options as a Westminster student

Private universities set their own health coverage policies, and they change — confirm directly with Westminster whether a student plan is currently offered and whether any coverage requirement applies to you.

Whatever the campus offers, the four coverage sources below are the ones most Westminster students actually end up comparing — and the sticker price is rarely the real price once subsidies enter the picture:

A parent's plan (until 26)

Westminster draws heavily from out of state — and that's exactly when this option needs checking. A parent's HMO in Oregon or Colorado may treat Salt Lake City as out-of-network for everything except emergencies.

A student plan (if offered)

If Westminster offers coverage, compare its annual cost against a subsidized Marketplace plan before defaulting to it. Private-school student plans can be solid — but they're rarely subsidized the way Marketplace plans are.

A subsidized Marketplace plan

If you file taxes independently, healthcare.gov measures premium tax credits against your income alone. Typical student earnings — campus jobs, internships, part-time work — usually qualify for meaningful help.

Utah Medicaid

Utah expanded Medicaid: independent students with income under roughly 138% of the federal poverty level often qualify. Graduate students living on modest stipends should run this check before paying full freight for anything.

What matters locally

Out-of-state students usually need a Utah plan

Marketplace coverage follows where you live. If Salt Lake City is home for the school year, you generally shop Utah's Marketplace on healthcare.gov — and a permanent move to Utah can open a 60-day enrollment window if you had coverage before.

Salt Lake's two hospital systems

The Salt Lake Valley splits largely between two big health systems, and plans often favor one. Confirm the providers near campus — and any specialist you already see — are in-network before you enroll, not after.

Graduate students: check your age and your income

Many Westminster graduate students are past 26 and off the parent-plan option entirely. For them the real comparison is Marketplace vs. Medicaid vs. an employer plan — and modest grad-school income often qualifies for more help than expected.
