Switch Medigap Companies, Keep Plan G — For Less

Medigap benefits are identical by plan letter, so you can often switch carriers for a lower premium on the same coverage. Here's how, and how underwriting works.

The short answer

One of the most useful facts about Medicare Supplements is that they're standardized: a Plan G from any insurer covers exactly the same things as a Plan G from any other. Only the price differs. That means if you have Plan G (or any lettered plan), you can potentially switch to a cheaper insurer and keep identical coverage — pure savings, no downgrade.

The path isn't automatic, though. Switching usually means going through medical underwriting unless you have a guaranteed-issue right, so your health matters.

How switching works

To switch, you apply for the same plan letter with a new insurer. If you're approved, you enroll in the new plan and then cancel the old one. Because coverage is identical, there's no learning curve or benefit change — your doctors and coverage stay exactly the same; only the company and premium change.

The gate is underwriting: outside a guaranteed-issue window, the new insurer can ask health questions and decline you or charge more. If you're healthy, this is usually straightforward; if not, weigh your odds first. Our guide to what to do when your premium rises covers the shopping process.

When it's worth it

It's worth checking any time your premium climbs or you suspect you're overpaying — which is common, since people often keep the first plan they bought without re-shopping. Even a modest monthly savings adds up over years on identical coverage.

Just never cancel your current plan until the new one is approved and active. Our Medicare Supplement overview explains how to compare the same plan across carriers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch Medigap companies and keep the same coverage?

Yes. Medigap plans are standardized by letter, so a Plan G is identical across insurers. You can switch carriers for a lower premium with no change in coverage.

Does switching Medigap carriers require underwriting?

Usually yes, outside a guaranteed-issue window. The new insurer can ask health questions and decline you or charge more, so your health affects whether you qualify.

How do I switch without a coverage gap?

Apply for the same plan letter with a new insurer, and only cancel your old plan once the new one is approved and active.
